Paul Saunders is a founder and principal of James River Capital Corp. and affiliated companies (“James River”;) and portfolio manager for James River’s financial products. He currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of James River Capital Corp. and James River Financial Corp.
In addition to his work in finance, Mr. Saunders is highly active in philanthropy. As a University of Virginia alumnus, he frequently donates to his school, including significant contributions to the building of John Paul Jones Arena (home of UVA Cavaliers basketball). He has also supported the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, a nonpartisan organization which promotes the value of politics and the importance of civic engagement.
Each year Paul Saunders and his wife Vicki contribute to dozens of institutions and charitable organizations for a variety of causes. Mr. Saunders recently pledged to contribute a substantial sum to the Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has also supported the Community Cancer Fund, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, and Chrysalis Institute. He recently made a large commitment to Goochland Pet Lovers for the construction of a much-needed Goochland County Animal Shelter.
Paul recently launched The Saunders Family Foundation to more efficiently further his philanthropic goals. A seasoned professional with extensive experience in business development, Paul understands the importance of securing proper funding. Through The Saunders Family Foundation, he can do his part in helping organizations carry out their initiatives and sustain overall growth.
More About Paul Saunders
Mr. Saunders has 25+ years of career experience. After receiving a B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1977 and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1979, he joined Warburg Paribas Becker’s Corporate Finance Department in 1979. He moved on from banking to pursue the investment and trading world at WPB’s affiliated company, A.G. Becker. He worked in the Commodity Department of A.G. Becker from 1980 to 1983.
From 1983 to December 1994, he was Director of Managed Accounts and Commodity Funds at Kidder, Peabody & Co. (“Kidder”). In 1986, Paul became President of KP Futures Management Corp., and in 1989 he earned the additional distinction of becoming a Managing Director of Kidder and a member of Kidder’s Management Council. Upon Paul’s acquisition of KP Futures Management Corp. in 1995, he changed the company’s name to James River Capital Corp. and has served as its Chairman and CEO since that time.
